Wireless Network Security

More and more people are enjoying the convenience of wireless networks in their homes and offices.  The ability to move freely between rooms to surf the web, pay bills, or just check your email has become a luxury that most can afford.  When purchasing wireless hardware, make sure you buy devices that support 802.11 b/g or draft-N standards.   As a minimum, you will need a wireless router or access point connected to your high-speed internet connection and a wireless adapter for your PC or Notebook (if not built in).  The following 4 items together will insure a secure wireless experience at home or the office:

  • Change your Access Point password from the factory default.

  • Disable the SSID broadcasting of your network name so others can’t see it.

  • Enable WEP or WPA encryption between your access point and wireless   adapter.

  • Enable the MAC Address filtering to ensure that only your systems can access your network.

When utilizing wireless internet access in a public place, keep in mind a couple things to ensure the security of your system and data don’t get in the wrong hands.  Make sure you have your Windows Firewall or other security software turned on.  This will protect your system from hackers or other malicious attempts to take control of your system.  Another good way to protect yourself is the disabling of the exceptions that control access to file sharing and printing of your system.  These precautions should protect you but be mindful of where you are and avoid accessing websites that are asking for personal data or passwords like banks or other financial / government institutions.  It is best to visit these sites in the privacy of your office or home where the data is encrypted and difficult to steal.

In summary, take the time to set up your hardware properly to optimize the speed, make sure it is secure by changing default passwords, disabling SSID broadcasting, and setting either WEP or WPA encryption.   Doing this right the first time will certainly put your mind at ease, and allow you to enjoy the exciting world of wireless computing and its benefits while keeping those who are not authorized off your wireless network.
